How to Choose a Niche For Your Blog

The first step you will take when it comes to blogging is the niche that you want your website to appear in. Ultimately this is one of the most important decisions you will make in your blogging career. Your niche will determine how well you can create your website and it will also determine how much money your website will make and how much your website will ultimately sell for.

You can make money in almost any chosen niche (some easier than others) and there are just a few golden rules that you need to follow when choosing your niche

Choose Something You Are Passionate About
Choosing a niche that you are passionate about is the most important rule for bloggers. Experienced bloggers who create many websites each year will be able to easily create websites in niches they are not passionate about, but for new site flippers I would stick to niches that you are personally passionate about.

Why do I say this? Because if you choose a niche you are personally passionate about:

You will be excited about it – Blogging at times can be tedious and even though it is not hard work a lot of people get discouraged and never put in the effort to create a great website. By choosing a niche that you are passionate about you increase the chances of you actually getting the job done. If you fail to get the job done you will receive $0 in compensation, if you choose a niche you are passionate about a get to the finish you will be able to bank your check, which is what this is all about.

You will generate better quality articles – You want to create articles for your website that people will look at and believe that it was written by someone who knows this industry. Readers will look at the articles and see if they are genuine and if they will stand under their scrutiny. The better the articles the the more money you make from your website, so by writing about something you are passionate about you can almost ensure better articles than if you were writing about a topic that did not interest you.

You will have a desire to excel – The desire to excel and make your website excellent is what will bring in the income. I have seen many people blogging just for the money, and because they are only doing it for the money they miss out on a lot of detail that you need to make a site flip valuable. If you are passionate about your niche you will have a desire to excel.

You will be encouraged to do it again – If you enjoy your niche and enjoyed the experience of blogging once then it is likely you will do it again. If it was a horrible experience for you then it is likely that you will resist repeating the procedure. As the most money will come from you doing it over and over again (as you will learn with experience), then it is a good idea to stay within a niche you like so the experience will be enjoyable for you.

Choose Something You Have a Knowledge In (Or Something You Want To Develop a Knowledge In)
At the core of your website will be its articles. The articles provide a base for which the entire website is structured, it exists for the sharing of information. When choosing a niche it is a good idea to choose a niche that you are familiar with. You should have some experience in the field you are talking about as this leads to more informed articles and a better overall blog.

However, you cannot always know a lot about a topic that you want to create a website in, so the next best thing is to have a desire to learn about a certain niche. You can become an expert in a topic in just 4 weeks, and there is so much information available online that it is fairly simple to learn enough about a topic to create some articles on the topic.

Don’t Choose A Niche That is Too Specific

Don’t go getting too ahead of yourself and choosing a topic that is just too niche. A topic that is too specific will fail at drawing a large enough crowd.

Lets taking dogs as a niche for example. General dog information, dog health care, dog washing etc are all specific niches but are large enough to draw a crowd. However, you can become even more specific such as Labrador Toe Nail Care (stupid I know but it is just an example). There will not be that many people searching the internet to find information on Labrador Toe Nail Care. Creating a site on this is too specific and will not draw enough traffic to make you a lot of money. It is better to stick with a wider niche such as “Labrador Dogs”.

Brainstorm Then Choose

It is always a great idea to brainstorm ideas before you choose a niche that you are going to create a website around. Brainstorming is easy and fun and should only take 10 minutes. Here are the simple steps to a successful brainstorming session

1. Get Secluded – In order to have a successful brainstorming session your mind needs to be clear of distractions. Go into a room by yourself and shut the door to do your brainstorming session. Keep interruptions to an absolute minimum.

2. Write Down Everything – Write down everything that comes to your mind and exclude nothing (no matter how crazy and out there it may be). Make sure that you write down everything you think of, this opens up your mind to many possibilities before shutting them down because of external reasons.

3. Give It a Limit – Limit your brainstorming sessions. I like to limit mine to 10-15 minutes. After that time you start to get less focused and you will begin to daydream. Keeping it short keeps your focused and pushes great ideas out of your mind.

4. Go Back and Cancel – Once you have written down everything you have thought of in your brainstorming session it is time to go back and cancel out the obvious ideas that will not work. Cancel out things you are not really passionate about, feel you could not write over 30 articles on, or you deem to be too niche and not profitable. Cancel all but 5 of your ideas

5. Pick From The Few – Now you need to look at these few ideas that you have left and make an educated decision based on your options. Think about the topic you are most passionate about, also think about the topic you deem to be most profitable. Think about what other people would like and what would look good to sellers. Then choose the niche you want to create a website for.

Do Your Research
It is vital that you do your research before you start paying for domain names and hosting. Something that might seem like a good idea to you might not actually be a great idea. By doing your research you are minimising your risk of failure and increasing the chances of success (which is obviously what we are aiming for).

There are a few simple ways to do some research to try and discover if your website flip will be profitable or not.

Google Keyword Search
This is a really simple exercise to do and will tell you a lot about your market. It works almost every time and it is a good gauge for how profitable your website could become.

Go to www.google.com and type in the main keyword phrase that sums up your website. What will people be interested in and what will they search in Google to find your website.

Type this into Google and click search and then have a look at how many PAID results are shown. The more paid results that are shown the more likely that your niche is profitable.

Sitepoint

Go to www.sitepoint.com and have a look through the marketplace for websites that are in similar niches to yours. Look at how much they are selling for (and if they are selling), and look at the stats and figures of each website.

It is likely that your website will sell for a similar price if it had the same stats so look closely and see what you will have to accomplish to get a certain sales price.

If there are websites in your niche that aren’t selling this could be a bad sign. If there are no websites in your niche do not be discouraged because this is not always a bad sign. This could give you an advantage because there are no rival websites to compete with

Look At Your Competitors
You should have to look at your competitor websites through doing a simple Google search for websites in your niche.

Analyse these websites, what are they doing well and what could be done better. Copy their concepts that make their website great (don’t copy exact looks and articles because this is illegal), and then improve on the things that you feel need to be improved on.

By researching and analyse the best in the business then you can create a website that is of an extremely high quality. The higher the quality of the website the higher the selling price.

Look At How Can You Make Money

One of the things that makes blogging even more interesting is earning an income from it. It is good to do some research beforehand on how your website will generate income.

Maybe you can use Google AdSense, or maybe their are some affiliate products that you could promote. Maybe you could host some private advertising on your site or maybe do some paid reviews.

Find out the ways your website could be profitable. The more ways it can be profitable the better. If you are struggling to find a way to make your website profitable then maybe this is not the best niche to be in.
